너무나 애통한 우리 위안부 할머니들의 숨겨진 이야기

<소녀 이야기>는 우리 나라의 뼈아픈 위안부 문제를 3D 애니메이션으로 묘사하여 그만큼 위안부 문제에 대하여 누구나 쉽게 곱씹어 볼 수 있도록 만든 작품이다. 이 애니메이션은 정대협(한국정신대문제대책협의회)의 협조와 이제는 돌아가신 정서운 (1924-2004) 할머니의 경험을 토대로 이야기가 구성되었고 거기에 할머니 본인의 생생한 육성이 실감나게 잘 곁들여져 있다. 우리가 잘 알고 있다고 생각하는 문제이지만 실제로 보면 잘 몰랐던 일제의 잔혹했던 제국주의의 희생자였던 한 소녀의 증언이 우리에게 가져다 주는 파장은 매우 크며 여운이 오래 남는다. 부산국제영화제 와이드 앵글 경쟁부문에 상영되었으며 독일 슈르트가르트 애니메이션 페스티벌 단편 부문에도 진출했었던 수작이다. <Herstory> is a 3D animation that depicts the painful history of a girl who went through the experience of 'comfort women' under no choice of her own. The animation was created with the cooperation of the WHKMLA (The Korean Council for the Women drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan) along with the vivid narration by Jeong Seo-un (1924-2004) whose personal story the animation is based on. We may say that we are aware of the plight of the comfort women but the testimonial animation definitely hits a nerve and its aftermath clings on for a long time even after the film is over. The animation has been showcased at the Busan International Film Festival and the German Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film. [Jenie Hahn]

1972년 생. 첫 단편애니 <생존>(1995)을 시작으로 <큐빅>(1996), <등대지기>(2001), <인생>(2003), 〈The Room〉(2005)을 만들었다. 현재(2012년) 청강문화산업대학교 겸임교수로 재직중이다.

조이가 찾아간 제주 마을의 놀라운 신당 이야기!

조이 로시타노는 제주에 산지 6년 째 부터 주변에서 들었던 ‘제사, 신당, 신화’ 등에 대해 알아내기 위해 마을의 신당과 신화에 대해 카메라로 기록하기 시작했다. 조이가 서툰 한국어로 “김씨 조상 이야기~”라고 말을 건네면, 할머니들은 웃음을 터트리며 이 외국인에게 술술 이야기를 꺼내놓게 된다.

조이는 제주인들이 섬에서 치열하게 살아온 삶을 세대와 지역을 넘어 전하고 싶다. 그는 수 백 년 동안 마을 사람들의 고단한 삶을 위로해오며 기적과 고난의 경험을 함께 한 신앙을 마을 사람들과 심방의 목소리로 들려준다. 위협받는 정체성, 마을에서 벌어지는 다양한 굿과 심방들의 굿판 모습과 이야기, 신당을 훼손하는 기독교 맹신자들과 훼손된 신당을 복원해내려는 젊은 사람들 등 진지한 이야기 속에 코믹한 상황들이 곳곳에 잠복해있다.(안혜경)

Joey Rositano starts to record about the village shrines and myths that he had been hearing about so much in order to find out about the exact nature of 'Jae-sa(ancestral ceremony), shrines, and myths' after having lived in Jeju for 6 years. When Joey starts speaking in broken Korean, the grandmothers cannot help but start laughing and lower their guard. At the same time, their tongues start to loosen up in their fascinating tales of the past about the story of Mr. Kim, the famous ancestor.

Joey's desire is to convey the lives of the people that have gone through a history of brutal survival down the next generation and the next overcoming age and region. He lets us know about the religion that have stood by the people over hundreds of years in their hard struggle which is truly miraculous in the voices of the village people and the shamans. The film has many hidden humorous elements tucked away while telling the serious stories of the various shamans and their ceremonies, Christians who have attempted to destroy the shrines as well as the young people who are valiantly trying to restore these disturbed shrines to their former glory. An ordinary 15 year old Adele meets the blue-haired Emma and experiences a 'once in a lifetime' love while searching out her own identity and developing her own sexuality. The literature class where they discuss 'falling in love at first sight' and 'having a hole in the middle of your heart' in the beginning of the film while reading the classics is very impressive. The audience naturally becomes one with this emotion while observing the two girls' relationship in the movie. The 3 hour running time is far from tedious and the brilliant direction where one is made to feel that homosexuality is no different from heterosexuality is quite amazing. The main actress who plays Adele is amazing in her performance enough to win the best actress award at the LA Film Critics Association Awards, while the film won other awards from the Chicago Film Critics Association Awards, the 85th National Board of Review Awards (USA) as well as the 39th Cesar Awards. 보수적인 분위기의 독일 ‘필징’ 시의 소녀 소냐는 아주 똑똑하고 명랑하다. 더군다나 교사의 추천으로 글쓰기 공모전에 나가 대통령상을 받고부터는 시 전체의 관심과 사랑을 받는다. 또 다른 에세이 공모전에 나가도록 추천을 받는데... <2차 세계대전 시절의 내 고향>이라는 주제로 응모한 것이 문제의 시작! 글쓰기를 위해 자료 조사를 하다보니 시에서 존경받고 있는 성직자와 지식인들이 그 당시 친 나찌 세력이었던 것! 그러나 조사를 멈추지 않는 쏘냐는 주변으로부터 목숨을 위협 받을 만큼 심한 협박을 받는데... 역사의 진실을 파헤치는 심각한 주제를 다루면서도 코믹한 상황 연출로 웃음을 선사한다. 소녀의 사랑과 용기 그리고 의지를 보여주는 매력적인 영화. Sonya is a smart and precocious girl born in a very conservative West German city of Pfilzing. After receiving the president's award for her essay, the whole city pays attention to her every move and idolizes her. She is also encouraged to go and write for another essay competition soon after. However, the essay that she wrote titled 'My Hometown in the Third Reich" sparks off a whole lot of controversy. While doing research for her essay, she has discovered that the respected clergymen and the intellectuals were all pro-Nazis during the war. Despite many threats to her well-being as well as her family, she does not stop her pursuit in the quest for justice. The film deals with the serious matter of war crimes yet offers unexpected laughter with a comic direction. A truly attractive film about a girl's love, courage and determination. 아픈 우리 현대사의 고비고비에서 만나는 만신 김금화의 놀라운 인생여정과 장엄하면서도 신명나는 굿!

김금화는 위안부 소집을 피하기 위해 14세 어린 나이에 시집을 갔다. 어린시절의 김새론, 신을 받은 류현경, 만신으로서 이름을 알린 중년의 문소리! 이들의 놀라운 연기력으로 재현된 김금화의 과거와 이 다큐를 위해 김금화를 직접 촬영한 부분 그리고 굿 자료 장면 등을 통해 파란 만장한 만신의 삶과 우리의 전통무속신앙이 보인다. 그 삶은 한국의 비극적 현대사와 무속인으로서 그리고 여성으로서 김금화의 삶이 다르지 않음을 보여준다. 예술성, 역사성, 실험성을 다 갖춘! 보고 또 봐도 지루하지 않을 만큼 흥미롭고 굉장히 창의적이며 우리 무속 신앙과 만신에 대한 놀라운 경험을 하게 된다.(안혜경)

Kim Geum-hwa gets married off to avoid being recruited into the Japanese comfort women at a young age of 14. Her young self is played by Kim Saeron, teenage years and her 20's by Ryu Hyun-kyung, and topped off by the stellar actress Moon Sori in her later middle-aged years. The acting portrayed by these talented actresses make the life of Kim Geum-hwa come alive while we get a glimpse into the life of the traditional shamanism through the actual footage of this great shaman intertwined with scenes of 'gut' ceremonies that are a spectacular part of this great shaman. This shows that her life as a woman in the tragic Korean history and her life as a looked down upon shaman is not much different. This film has all the artistic, historic and experimental elements that interest and fascinate the audience. It is a creative masterpiece where we can experience the amazing traits of traditional shamanism and the life of a great shaman. (Ahn Hye-Kyoung)

서울대학교 미술대학에서 서양화를 전공하고 미국 칼아츠 대학원에서 사진을 전공. 주로 냉전/분단과 전통종교문화에 관심을 가지고 사진, 비디오, 설치 작품을 해왔고 다수의 국내/외 유명 전시장에서 전시를 했다. 2004년 에르메스미술상 수상. 다수의 중단편 영화와 장편 영화가 해외 영화제에 초대받았고 첫 장편 <다시 태어나고 싶어요, 안양에>로 2011 로테로담국제영화제 Bright Future부문에 선정.

전쟁은 군대 내부에서가 아니라 군대 바깥에서 아군을 위협하는 적과 싸워야 하는 것이 마땅할 터. 하지만 현재 군대 상황을 보면 경악할만하고 기가 막혀할만한 <또 다른 전쟁>이 내부에서 실제로 일어나고 있다. 이 다큐멘터리는 미군 내에서 빈번히 일어나고 있는 성폭력 문제를 실제 성폭행을 당한 여성 및 남성들의 용기 있는 인터뷰를 통해 논리적으로 고발하고 있다. 슬픈 사실은 여군의 경우 적의 총격에 의해 사망하는 통계에 비해 동료 또는 상사에 의해 강간당하는 수치가 더 높다는 것이다. 이 다큐를 통해 은폐의 역사와 그 부조리에 대항하는 몇몇 용감한 사람들이 추구하는 변화와 노력들을 볼 수 있을 것이다. It should only be right that a battle should take place outside the military and not within. The reality of the situation however is that an 'invisible war' is raging on inside. This documentary explicitly exposes the sexual violence that is rampant within the American military through the testimonials of women and men who have gone through the horrifying experience. The saddest part of this whole matter is that in the case of the women in the military, the likelihood of them getting shot and killed in the battlefield is far lower than the possibility of them getting raped. Through this eye-opening documentary, we will be able to see the efforts of the brave few who are trying to enforce a wind of change against the mighty military forces. [Jenie Hahn]

전화기 너머로 들려오는 거부할 수 없는 목소리.....과연 당신이라면?

한 패스트 푸드점의 매니저를 맡고 있는 산드라의 하루는 녹록치 않다. 하나에서 열까지 모든 것이 잘못 돌아가고 있는 와중에 자신을 경찰관이라고 소개하는 한 남자의 전화가 걸려온다. 그 경찰관은 그녀 밑에서 일하는 그렇잖아도 눈에 가시인 여직원 베키가 고객의 지갑을 훔쳤다고 얘기해주고 그 경찰관의 지시에 따라 베키는 감금이 된다. 그리고 베키는 수치스러운 몸 수색까지 당한다. 하지만 지갑은 온데간데 없고 식당에서 일하는 사람들이 차례로 그녀를 감시하다가 하물며 나중에는 다른 손님들에게까지 차례가 주어지는데....미국에서 실제로 일어난 상황을 토대로 만들어진 이 영화의 등장인물들의 운명은 과연 어떻게 될까. Sandra, who is a manager at a fast food joint is having a bad day. Everything seems to be going wrong when she gets a call from a man who says he is a police officer. He tells Sandra that Becky who is one of the employees has stolen from a customer and that she needs to be locked up and go through a body search. However, the allegedly stolen wallet is nowhere to be found. Sandra at her wit's end in taking care of the busy restaurant asks other employees to keep an eye on Becky until even some of the customers take a turn in watching over Becky under the compelling direction of the police officer. 노스캐롤라이나예술대학에서 영화를 전공한 크레이그 조벨은 학교에서 뜻을 같이한 친구들과 함께 세 개의 단편 <죠지 워싱톤>(2000), <모든 소녀들>(2003), <언더토우>(2003)를 만든다. 그는 이 작품들에서 공동 프로듀서와 제작부장 등을 맡으며 다양한 영화 경험을 쌓게 된다. 그의 다른 장편으로는 <웅장한 소리의 세계>(2007)가 있다.

Sixteen year old Claireece Precious Jones seems hopelessly weighed down by life's hardships. She is illiterate, overweight, abused by both her mother and father and nobody seems to care or take any notice of her. Her life in Harlem continuously threatens to bring her down including the fact that her first born illegitimate daughter is suffering from Down's Syndrome. When nothing could be worse, she gets pregnant with her second child which makes her principal decide to send her to an alternative school as a final resort. [Jenie Hahn]

미국 펜실베니아주 필라델피아 (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA) 출생으로 자신의 아버지에게 받은 학대를 토대로 아동학대에 대한 경종을 울리고 싶은 영화를 만들고 싶었다고 한다. 그래서 나온 작품이 선댄스 영화제 및 온갖 상을 휩쓴 ‘Precious'다. 가장 최신작으로는 ‘대통령의 집사/The Butler (2013)’가 있다.

사과 받아야 할 공주는 왜 도망가야 했을까? 우리 사회의 민낯!

17살 평범한 소녀 한공주는 어찌된 일인지 담임의 어머니 집에 살게 된다. 가방 속의 짐도 풀지 않고, 친구들과의 관계도 어렵다. 그나마 공주에게 위안은 노래와 수영이다. 그럭저럭 학교와 집에 적응해 가던 어느 날 교실에 한 무리의 학부모들이 벌떼처럼 들이닥치면서 겨우 평온을 되찾아가는 공주의 생활을 무참히 깨뜨려 버린다. 결국 살던 집에서 나오고, 어렵게 사귄 친구들과도 헤어진다. 수영을 배우는 공주는 과연 어떤 선택을 할까? 우린 공주의 선택에 얼마나 도움을 줄 수 있을까? 성폭력 사건을 대하는 우리사회의 민낯을 가감없이 드러내는 영화이다. ‘저는 분명 사과받는 입장인데, 왜 도망쳐야 하는 거죠..?’ 라는 공주의 헛헛한 외침이 아프게 와 닿는다. 17 year old Hang Gongju for some reason is put in a situation where she has to live with her teacher's mother. She never unpacks her bag and her relationship with her peers does not seem to be going smoothly either. The two things that consoles her at least are singing and swimming. After some time has passed, Gongju seems to be finally adjusting to her life when angry parents suddenly burst into the classroom wrecking havoc in Gongju's peaceful life. She ends up leaving her current residence and parts with her new found friends. Just what kind of choice will she ultimately make? What kind of help can we give to Gongju? This is a film that does not hesitate to starkly expose the horrific details of how our society responds to sexual violence. Gongju's words where she says, "I should be the one receiving the apology but why am I the one running away?" continues to ring painfully in our ears long after the film is over. 단편영화 <아빠>(2004)가 2005 부산국제영화제에서 초청되었고, 서울독립영화제에서 한국영상자료원장상을 수상했다. 단편 <적의 사과>(2007)는 부산국제영화제 와이드앵글부문에 초청되었으며 미장센영화제 비정성시부문 최우수상과 촬영상을 수상하였다. 2013년 첫번째 장편 <한공주>를 연출했다.
