까모메 식당으로 잘 알려진 오기가미 나오코의 영화. 따뜻한 감동에 코믹함까지 갖춘 영화로 이번 영화제에 개막작으로 소개된다.

엄마가 막 돌아가시자 공황장애로 외출을 못하는 형 모리의 상태는 더욱 심각해지고 그 때문에 늘 짜증나는 여동생 리사 사이에서 둘째인 레이는 하루하루를 지탱하기가 너무 힘들다. 엄마를 돌보기 위해 일본서 건너온 할머니와는 언어 소통이 안되며 엄마의 빈자리로 불안해진 남매들은 매일 좌충우돌의 연속이다. 엄마와의 추억이 담긴 만두와 재봉틀이 언어소통이 불가능한 할머니와의 연결 끈이 되면서 이들 남매는 서로에게 따뜻한 애정을 회복하며 서서히 안정을 찾아간다. (안혜경)

 

Maury the oldest child suffers even more severe panic disorders after the death of their mother. Lisa, the youngest irks Ray with her incessant demands. Between his older brother and younger sister, Ray does not have a day of peace. Ray who works in a lab has his own quirks of wearing the same style of clothes everyday and his only hobby is making and playing with Gundam robots. On top of all that, he is burdened with a grandmother from Japan who does not speak a word of English. Everything seems to be topsy turvy until Maury accidentally discovers an old sewing machine left behind by his mother. With the sewing machine and Japanese soul food as connectors, this seemingly dysfunctional family find warmth, understanding and solace in each other through their differences. (AHN Hyekyoung)

 

<감독> 오기가미 나오코

1972년 생. 치바대학 공업학부를 졸업 후, 94년에 미국의 남 캘리포니아 대학 대학원 영화학과로 유학을 떠났다. 오기가미 나오코 감독이 유학을 떠났던 90년대 미국은 선댄스 영화제를 중심으로 미국의 인디 영화가 붐을 일으켰던 시기이다. 개성적인 미국 인디 영화에서 많은 영감을 얻은 감독은 영화를 만들고자 하는 의지를 다지며 일본으로 귀국하여, 2001년 일본의 선댄스 영화제라고 할 수 있는 제23회 피아 필름페스티벌에서 중편영화 <별군, 꿈군>으로 음악상을 수상했다. 이 때 피아 필름페스티벌의 장학 프로그램으로 만들어진 영화가 감독의 첫 장편 데뷔작인 <요시노 이발관>이다. 이 작품으로 베를린 국제 영화제에서 아동영화부문특별상을 수상하는 쾌거를 이루었고, 차기작 <카모메 식당>은 일반적인 마케팅 없이 입 소문 하나로 수많은 대중의 사랑을 한 몸에 받으며 ‘슬로우 라이프 무비’라는 일본영화의 새로운 장르를 구축했다. 점차 국제적으로 알려지기 시작한 오기가미 나오코 감독의 세 번째 영화 <안경>은 해외 영화제에서 주목을 받으며 2008년 선댄스 영화제, 홍콩영화제, 샌프란시스코영화제에 진출하였다.

<Director> Naoko OGIGAMI

Naoko Ogigami was born in 1972. After finishing her engineering studies at Chiba University, she went on to study film in 1994 at the University of Southern California. America in the 1990's when Naoko Ogigami went to study was the time when there was a huge boom of indie movies centered around the Sundance Film Festival. Having been influenced greatly with this trend, she came back to Japan and won the best music award for her short film titled <Hoshino-kun, Yomeno-kun> at the 3rd PIA Film Festial in Japan. With the scholarship support from PIA Film Festival, she directed her first feature length film, the <Yoshino's Barber Shop>. With this film, she received a Special Mention at the Kinder Film Fest of Berlin International Film Festival 2004. Her next film <Kamome Diner> became a commercial and critical success without much marketing just by word of mouth. She had created a whole new genre of 'slow life movie' in Japan. With ever growing fame internationally, <Megane> her 3rd feature length film garnered a lot of attention and went on to the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival as well as the San Francisco International Film Festival.

어려서 놀이로 시작된 만큼 해녀들에게 물질은 재미와 보람을 다 안겨주는 직업이라는 걸 다큐멘터리 형식의 애니메이션으로 보여준다. 물질은 ‘저승길에 돈벌러 가는 일’이 될 만큼 늘 위험이 따른다. 그래서 용왕님께 굿을 통해 죽음에 대한 두려움을 털어내야 한다는 강두교 해녀는 78세이다. 제주 해녀의 일생을 5분의 애니메이션에 이미지와 음성 그리고 음향으로 농축시켜 따뜻한 시선으로 잘 드러낸다. (안혜경)

 

The diving work of the haenyeo began as play for most Jeju women in the past. This animated short documentary successfully conveys to us that this diving work was both a source of entertainment and labor work simultaneously. However, it also highlights the fact that this diving work was 'a highway to hell' kind of work with danger lurking at every corner. The protagonist in this animated short is a 78 year old haenyeo named Kang Du-kyo. The animation, voice and images of this amazing woman are condensed delightfully into a 5 minute odyssey. (J. <감독> 강희진, 한아렴

학교 선후배 사이로, 영화제에서 우연히 만나 뜻이 맞아 공동 작업을 했다. 한국의 강인한 여성인 해녀를 소재로 공동 졸업 작품을 제작하였다.

<토끼와 거북이라고 말해도 모르잖아> (2010), <사공이 많으니까>(2011)등을 공동 연출하였다.

These directors went to the same school and decided to collaborate together through a chance meeting at a film festival. They have decided to create a graduation project together with the theme of the strong image of the Jeju haenyeo.

They have also collaborated together with <They won't know even if we tell them it is the Tortoise and the Rabbit> (2010) and <Too many cooks spoil the broth> (2011).
